The Red Oak neighborhood is near Harbour Town’s golf links where you will probably spot the Ibis, a bird identified by a long, curved beak. The Ibis is white when mature, but youngsters are mostly brown. Just a short walk or bike ride down the leisure trails to the beach, bird watchers will spot shore birds, the smallest of which are Piping Plovers, which can be seen running along the tide line so fast their legs are a blur. Somewhat larger, but of similar behavior, are Sanderlings and Sandpipers. Brown Pelicans are entertaining to watch because they glide gracefully through the air, often skimming along inches above the water. Red Oak is aptly named for one of the largest and most important timber trees. One of the fastest growing of the oaks, it attains up to 80 feet with a diameter of two to three feet. Its acorns provide a food source for numerous birds and animals. Nestled among the trees are beautiful homes with gorgeous entryways, hardwood floors, granite cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. One-two-and even three-car garages are attached to some of the homes.
